difficult
😣 困 = enclosed (囗) + tree (木); 难 = hard/difficult — trapped tree = stuck situation
困 shows a tree boxed in by walls, meaning stuck or trapped. 难 means hard or arduous. Together 困难 = a stuck-and-hard situation, i.e. difficulty or hardship.
困 — enclosure 囗 + tree 木
困 is an associative compound showing a tree (木) confined within an enclosure (囗), suggesting something hemmed in and unable to grow. From this image of restriction came the meanings 'trapped,' 'distressed,' and by extension 'tired' or 'sleepy,' as if one's energy were boxed in.
难 — 又 (right hand) + 隹 (short-tailed bird)
Originally written with 堇 (clay) plus 隹 (bird), 難 depicted a rare bird and was borrowed to mean 'difficult.' The modern simplified form replaces the left side with 又 (hand). The phonetic role of the original left component gave the reading nán.
