factor

🧩 因 cause + 素 basic element = a factor in the mix

Each 因素 is one causal building block. Like ingredients in a recipe, factors are the basic elements that combine to produce a result.

因 — enclosure 囗 + big 大
因 originally pictured a person (大) lying on a mat or cushion, shown by the surrounding box (囗). The original sense was 'mat' or 'to rely on,' which extended to 'cause,' 'reason,' and 'because of.' The 'mat' meaning was later written with 茵.

素 — silk 糸 + sheng 𠂹 (hanging threads)
Originally depicted raw, undyed silk hanging to dry, with the silk radical 糸 below and strands above. From this came the meaning 'plain, unadorned, white,' then extended to 'basic element' or 'plain/simple' in general. The 'vegetarian' sense developed later from the idea of plain, unembellished food.
