comedy
🎭 喜 (joy) + 剧 (drama) = joyful drama = comedy
喜 means happiness or joy (think 喜欢 = to like). 剧 means drama or play (as in 戏剧). Together: a happy/joyful play, i.e. comedy. Contrast with 悲剧 (bēijù) = sad drama = tragedy.
喜 — drum 壴 (top) + mouth 口 (bottom)
Originally a pictograph showing a drum (壴) above a mouth (口), depicting people singing or shouting joyfully alongside drumming at a celebration. The combination conveyed festive happiness, and the character came to mean 'joy' or 'to like.' The drum element 壴 itself depicts a drum on a stand.
剧 — 豦 (tiger+pig) + 刂 knife radical
Originally written 劇, a phono-semantic compound: 豦 (jù, a fierce beast) gives the sound, while 刂 (knife) suggests intensity or cutting action. The original meaning was 'severe' or 'intense,' later extended to 'drama/play' since theatrical performances were dramatic and intense. 剧 is the simplified form.
