商贩
shāng fàn · HSK 7
peddler
🧺 商贩 = 商 commerce + 贩 to peddle = a small-time trader or street peddler
商 carries the sense of trade or business; 贩 means to buy-and-resell or peddle goods. Stacked together they name the person who does it: a petty trader or street vendor. The fàn in 贩 is the same one in 贩卖 (to peddle, to sell).
商 — 亠 lid + 丷 + 冏 window/enclosure
In oracle bone script 商 depicted a raised platform or altar-like structure, and it served as the name of the Shang dynasty and its capital region. The modern components are a late simplification of that pictograph and carry no separate meaning. The sense 'trade, merchant' arose later, traditionally linked to Shang people who travelled to buy and sell after their dynasty fell.
