和气

hé qi · HSK 7

friendly

🕊️ 和 (harmony) + 气 (air/spirit) = a harmonious vibe, i.e. friendly and amiable

和 carries peace and harmony; 气 is air, breath, or mood. Together they describe someone whose mood gives off harmony, which is what makes them polite and easy to get along with.

和 — grain 禾 (phonetic) + mouth 口
和 is a phono-semantic compound: 禾 (grain) gives the sound and 口 (mouth) hints at meaning, originally suggesting voices joining in agreement or song. From this it came to mean harmony, peace, and 'together with'. In Japanese it also became the native word for Japan itself.

气 — steam/vapor radical 气
Originally a pictograph of rising vapor or clouds drifting in the sky, depicting curling streams of air. The character came to mean breath, air, and by extension vital energy or 'qi.' The simplified form 气 keeps the original outline; the traditional 氣 added 米 (rice) to suggest steam rising from cooking grain.
