和尚 — monk

🛕🙏 和 harmony + 尚 to esteem = one who esteems harmony: a monk

Originally a respectful title for a senior Buddhist teacher, later any monk. The 和 (peace/harmony) half ties neatly to the calm of monastic life.

和 — grain 禾 (phonetic) + mouth 口
和 is a phono-semantic compound: 禾 (grain) gives the sound and 口 (mouth) hints at meaning, originally suggesting voices joining in agreement or song. From this it came to mean harmony, peace, and 'together with'. In Japanese it also became the native word for Japan itself.

尚 — 八 (eight/divide) over 向 (window/direction)
Originally depicted vapor or breath rising and dispersing upward from an opening, suggesting elevation and what is above. From this came the meanings 'still,' 'yet,' and 'to esteem' — what one looks up to. The modern senses of 'esteem' and 'still/yet' both stem from this upward orientation.
