司令

commanding officer
🎖️ 司 manage + 令 order = the one who manages the orders, the commander
司 means to take charge or manage; 令 means an order or command. Put together, 司令 is literally the manager of orders, which is exactly what a commanding officer does. The lìng in 令 also shows up in 命令, an order.
令 — person 人 (top) + kneeling figure 卩
Originally a pictograph showing a person under a roof issuing orders to a kneeling subordinate, depicting authority giving commands. The core meaning 'command, order' extended to 'cause/make (someone do something)' and later to honorific senses like 'good' or 'your' (令尊). The phonetic role in compounds like 零 and 铃 came later.
