受

shòu · HSK 3

to receive; to accept

🤲 受 = hand 爫 + boat 冂 + hand 又 — two hands passing a load, one receives

Etymology: top 爫 is a downward hand giving, bottom 又 is a hand taking; the middle was originally a boat 舟 being handed over. Hence 'receive' — and by extension the passive marker: the subject is on the receiving end of the action.

受 — hand 爫 (top) + 冖 + hand 又 (bottom)
Originally a pictograph showing two hands passing an object (the middle 冖 represented a boat or tray) between them. It depicted the act of giving and receiving, so the character meant both 'to give' and 'to receive.' Later 授 was created with the hand radical 扌 to mean 'give,' leaving 受 to mean 'receive' or 'accept.'
