占有

zhànyǒu · HSK 5

own

🏴 占 = divine/claim + 有 = have; to claim and hold as yours

占 originally meant to divine by oracle, then to take/claim; 有 means to have. Together: to claim and hold — own, occupy, possess. Used for territory, market share, or any kind of holding.

占 — divination 卜 + mouth 口
Originally a pictograph showing a divination crack 卜 above a mouth 口, depicting someone speaking the result of an oracle reading. From this 'declare by divination' sense it broadened to 'occupy, take possession of' (now read zhàn) and 'divine, foretell' (read zhān).

有 — hand 𠂇 + moon/meat 月
Originally depicted a hand holding a piece of meat (月 here is the 'meat' radical, not moon), expressing the idea of possessing something. Over time the meaning broadened from 'to hold/possess' to the general sense of 'to have' or 'there is/exists'.
