单一

one

☝️ 单一 = single + one; both characters mean 'one/single' → emphatic singular

单 (dān) means single/sole and 一 (yī) is the number one. Stacking two 'one' morphemes creates an emphatic 'singular/uniform'. Compare English 'one and only' — repetition for emphasis.

单 — 叩 (two mouths 口) over 甲 (shield/armor)
Originally a pictograph of a forked hunting weapon or shield with two prongs at the top. The ancient form shows a Y-shaped tool, later stylized into the modern shape. The meaning shifted from the weapon to 'single' or 'one,' possibly because it was a single-handed tool.

一 — single horizontal stroke
一 is one of the simplest pictographs in Chinese, depicting a single horizontal line to represent the number one. It has retained essentially the same form since oracle bone script over 3,000 years ago. By extension it also means 'first,' 'whole,' or 'same.'
