⚖️🤔 half believe + half doubt — a mind split right down the middle
半 (half) repeats twice, framing a tug-of-war: 信 (believe/trust) on one side, 疑 (doubt/suspect) on the other. You're literally half-in, half-out — sitting on the fence, unable to commit either way.
半 — 八 (split) + 牛 (ox/cow)
半 originally depicted an ox (牛) being divided in two, shown by the splitting strokes 八 on top. The image of cleaving an ox down the middle gave rise to the meaning 'half' or 'to divide into halves'. The modern sense of 'half' or 'partial' comes directly from this ancient act of splitting.
信 — person 亻 + speech 言
信 combines 亻(person) with 言(speech), depicting a person standing by their words. The original sense is 'truthfulness' or 'sincerity'—what a person says can be trusted. From this it extended to 'believe,' 'trust,' and later 'message' or 'letter,' since a letter carries one's word.
