午睡

wǔ shuì · HSK 2

to take a nap

😴 午 = noon + 睡 = sleep, so noon-sleep = nap

午 marks midday (as in 上午/下午), and 睡 is the verb for sleeping. Stick them together and you get the midday sleep — a siesta. The pinyin wǔ shuì rhymes loosely with whoo-shway, a soft drowsy sound.

睡 — eye 目 + drooping 垂
睡 is a semantic compound: 目 (eye) signals the meaning, while 垂 (to droop, hang down) suggests eyelids falling. Together they depict drooping eyelids, i.e. dozing off. The original sense was nodding off while sitting; it later broadened to mean sleep in general.
