shēng means to rise or ascend, xué means study or school. Together they describe moving up to the next school level, like graduating from middle school into high school.
升 — ladle/scoop pictograph (related to 斗)
升 originally pictured a ladle or dipper used to measure grain, closely related to 斗 (a larger dipper). It came to denote a unit of dry measure (a 'sheng', about a liter). From 'scooping up' it extended to the meaning 'rise, ascend'.
学 — hands 𦥑 + roof 冖 + child 子
Originally 學, depicting two hands manipulating something (often interpreted as counting rods or the 爻 trigram symbols) under a roof, with a child 子 below — a child learning under instruction. The simplified form 学 replaces the top with a stylized 龸. Core meaning has always been 'to study, learn'.
