劝阻
quàn zǔ · HSK 7
to dissuade
🛑 劝 (advise) + 阻 (block/hinder) = advise someone to stop = dissuade
劝 means to advise or urge, and 阻 means to block or obstruct. Together they describe urging someone to NOT do something — talking them out of it. The 阻 half also shows up in 阻止 (to prevent).
劝 — 又 (hand) + 力 (strength), simplified from 勸
The traditional form 勸 combines 雚 (a heron, providing the sound) with 力 (strength), suggesting using effort to persuade. In simplification, 雚 was replaced with 又 (hand), keeping 力 for the meaning of exerting effort to urge or advise someone.
