剩余

shèng yú · HSK 7

remainder

🍱 剩 leftover + 余 surplus = what remains after the rest is used up

Both characters already mean leftover or extra on their own, so stacking them doubles down on the idea of a remainder. 余 also means surplus or 'I/me' in classical use, but here it pairs with 剩 to mean what is left over.

剩 — 乘 (chéng, ride/multiply) + 刂 knife radical
Originally written with 刀/刂 (knife) plus 乘 as the phonetic, 剩 meant 'to cut off the remainder.' Over time the cutting sense faded and the character came to mean simply 'surplus' or 'what is left over.' The 乘 component still hints at the shèng pronunciation.

余 — roof 亼 + wooden post/pillar
Originally a pictograph of a simple thatched shelter or hut supported by a central post, 余 meant 'lodging' or 'temporary dwelling.' It was later borrowed phonetically to write the first-person pronoun 'I/me,' which became its dominant meaning. The 'surplus/remainder' sense developed through its use as a loan for 餘.
