再说
zàishuō · HSK 6
to say again; to put off a discussion until later
➕🗣️ zài = again/more + shuō = speak — say more on top
Literally 'again-say,' as in stacking another point onto what was already said. Think of someone at a table who keeps adding reasons: 'and furthermore…' Each zài piles on one more thing to shuō about.
再 — top 一 + 冂 frame + 土-like inner strokes
再 originally depicted a stack of fish or piled objects, suggesting accumulation or repetition. Over time it came to mean 'again' or 'once more,' emphasizing a second occurrence of an action. The modern form is stylized and no longer clearly pictographic.
说 — speech radical 讠(言) + 兑
说 combines the speech radical 讠(言, 'words') with 兑, which acts as the phonetic component. The character originally meant 'to explain' or 'to speak,' and broadened to mean 'say' or 'talk.' The same graph is also read 'yuè' meaning 'pleased,' a sense later written 悦.
