inside and outside

🏠🌍 内 = inside + 外 = outside — the full scope, in and out

内 (nèi) means interior or domestic, 外 (wài) means exterior or foreign. Together they cover both sides of any boundary — everything from a rooms walls to a countrys borders.

内 — enclosure 冂 + enter 入
内 originally depicted something entering (入) into an enclosed space (冂), giving the core sense of 'inside' or 'within'. The pictographic image of going into a covered area extended naturally to meanings like inner, internal, and inland. It contrasts with 外 ('outside').

外 — evening 夕 + divination 卜
Originally a compound of 夕 (evening) and 卜 (divination). Ancient Chinese divinations were performed in the morning; doing them at evening (夕) was considered irregular or 'outside' the norm. From this sense of deviation, 外 came to mean 'outside' or 'external'.
