common understanding
🤝 共识 = 共 (together) + 识 (knowledge/recognize) → shared knowing
共 means together/shared (think 共同 'common'); 识 means to know or recognize (as in 认识). Together they form 'shared recognition' — the consensus or wavelength two people land on when they see things the same way.
共 — 两手 (廾) holding up an object
共 originally depicted two hands raised together, lifting or offering something jointly. The ancient form showed a vessel or object held up by paired hands, conveying shared action. From 'lifting together' it shifted to mean 'together,' 'common,' or 'share.'
识 — speech radical 讠 + 只 zhī (phonetic)
识 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The speech radical 讠 (言) signals meaning related to words or knowing, while 只 hints at the sound. Originally written 識 with 戠, it meant 'to recognize' or 'know'; later it broadened to include knowledge and awareness.
