克隆

kè lóng · HSK 7

clone (loanword)

🐑 kè lóng is a sound-borrowing of the English clone (think Dolly the sheep)

克隆 is a phonetic loanword: the syllables kè lóng were picked to echo the English word clone, not for the literal sense of 克 (overcome) or 隆 (grand). The whole compound just transliterates the foreign term.

克 — top 十 + brother 兄 (helmeted figure)
Originally a pictograph of a person bearing a heavy helmet or burden on the head, suggesting the strength needed to carry or subdue a load. From 'to bear a weight' it extended to 'overcome, conquer, subdue,' and later 'to be able to.' The modern shape blends 十 above 兄.
