光芒

guāngmáng · HSK 7

ray of light

🌟 光芒 = 光 light + 芒 awn/spike, so a spike of light = a brilliant ray

光 means light; 芒 is the sharp awn (hair-like spike) on a grain stalk, hence anything thin and sharp. Together they name the slender, piercing rays that shoot out from a bright source: radiance.

光 — fire 火 (top) + person 儿 (bottom)
Originally a pictograph of a person with fire above their head, depicting a torchbearer or the radiance from a flame. The character evolved to mean 'light' or 'brightness' in general, and by extension 'glory' and 'to shine.' The modern top component is a stylized form of 火 (fire).
