保管

bǎo guǎn · HSK 7

to hold in safekeeping

🔒 保 (protect) + 管 (manage) = protect-manage, safekeeping

A 保安 (security guard) who also 管理 (manages) — someone who both protects and oversees your stuff. That double duty is why 保管 means to hold in safekeeping, and by extension, to guarantee.

保 — person 亻 + 呆 (child/protect phonetic)
Originally an ideograph showing an adult carrying a child on the back, meaning to protect or shield. The right side 呆 evolved from a depiction of a swaddled infant. Over time the meaning broadened from 'protect a child' to 'preserve, guarantee, keep safe.'

管 — bamboo radical 竹 + official 官 (phonetic)
Originally a pictograph of a bamboo tube or pipe, written with the bamboo radical 竹 on top. The lower component 官 supplies the sound. From 'bamboo pipe' it extended to 'tube,' then to 'manage' or 'control' — since pipes channel and regulate flow, the meaning shifted toward administration.
