to infringe the rights of
⚖️ 侵 qīn = to invade/encroach + 权 quán = rights/power; encroaching on rights = infringement
侵 means to invade or encroach (same 侵 as in 侵略 invasion); 权 means rights or power (as in 人权 human rights). Together: stepping on someone's rights, i.e. to infringe. Sounds like chin-chwen.
权 — wood 木 + 雚 (heron, phonetic)
Originally a phono-semantic compound: 木 (tree/wood) gives the meaning, while 雚 supplies the sound 'quan'. The early sense referred to a specific tree, then shifted to mean a weight used on a steelyard balance. From 'weight' it extended metaphorically to 'authority' and 'power', the dominant modern meaning.
