侵占
qīn zhàn · HSK 7
to invade and occupy (territory)
🪖🏴 侵占 = 侵 invade/encroach + 占 occupy/seize: troops move in and take the land
侵 carries the sense of creeping encroachment; 占 means to take and hold a spot (same 占 as in 占领). Together: force your way in and keep the territory. Sounds like chin-jahn.
占 — divination 卜 + mouth 口
Originally a pictograph showing a divination crack 卜 above a mouth 口, depicting someone speaking the result of an oracle reading. From this 'declare by divination' sense it broadened to 'occupy, take possession of' (now read zhàn) and 'divine, foretell' (read zhān).
