side

侧面 — side

👤 cè miàn = side + face — the profile view, a face seen from the side

側 means side or lateral, 面 means face or surface. Together they give you the side-face: a profile, or more broadly any lateral aspect of something.

侧 — person 亻 + 則 (rule/standard)
A semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 亻 (person) gives the meaning — originally a person leaning or standing to one side — while 則 supplies the sound. Over time it broadened from 'lean sideways' to the general sense of 'side' or 'flank.'

面 — enclosure 囗 + 自 (nose/face inside)
Originally a pictograph showing a face framed by an outline, with 自 (nose) inside representing the central feature of the face. The early meaning was 'face,' which extended to 'surface,' 'side,' and 'aspect.' In simplified Chinese, 面 also absorbed 麵, adding the meaning 'flour/noodles.'
