mission
🎯 使 send/envoy + 命 command = a command you are sent out to carry out
使 means to dispatch or an envoy; 命 means order or command. Together they form the order an envoy is sent to fulfill, which is exactly a mission, calling, or vocation. The harsher military sense keeps the literal sent-command meaning.
使 — person radical 亻 + official 吏
Originally a phono-semantic compound: 亻 (person) gives the meaning and 吏 (official, also a phonetic clue) suggests the sound. The early sense was 'to send a person on a mission,' from which came 'envoy/messenger' and the broader meanings 'to use' and 'to cause/make.'
命 — 亼 (gather) + 卩 (kneeling person) + 口 (mouth)
Originally depicted a kneeling figure receiving an oral command from above, combining 令 (order) with an added 口 (mouth) for emphasis. The image of authority issuing decrees extended from 'command' to 'mandate' and then 'destiny, life,' as one's fate was seen as decreed by Heaven.
