传来

chuánlái · HSK 3

deliver something to here

📨 传 = transmit + 来 = come; transmitted-here = news/sound reaches you

传 (chuán) means to pass on or transmit; 来 (lái) means to come. Together: something transmitted comes toward here — a sound, rumour, or message arrives from elsewhere.

传 — person radical 亻 + 专 (zhuān)
Originally a phono-semantic compound: 亻 (person) gives the meaning 'to pass on' between people, while 専/专 supplied the sound. Early uses referred to relay stations and messengers carrying word from place to place, which broadened to today's senses of transmitting, spreading, and handing down (as in tradition or biography).

来 — pictograph of a wheat plant with grain heads
来 originally depicted a stalk of wheat with drooping grain heads, and meant 'wheat' in oracle bone script. It was later borrowed phonetically to write the unrelated verb 'to come,' which became its dominant meaning. The original 'wheat' sense was taken over by 麥 (now 麦).
