会长

huìzhǎng · HSK 6

president (of club/society/etc.)

🎩 会 (meeting) + 长 (leader) = the one who leads the meetings

The person who runs a club is literally the meeting-leader. Sounds like 'hway-jahng' — the one who always has the gavel and calls the group to order.

会 — 人 person on top + 云 cloud/say below (simplified from 會)
The traditional form 會 showed a lid over a vessel with contents stacked inside, depicting things coming together — hence 'meet, gather, assemble.' From 'gathering' it extended to 'meeting,' then 'understand' (minds meeting) and 'be able to.' The simplified 会 keeps only a schematic top and bottom.

长 — pictograph of long-haired person with cane
Originally a pictograph showing a person with long, flowing hair leaning on a cane, representing an elder. The meaning extended from 'long hair' to 'long' in general, and also to 'elder' or 'to grow' (read zhǎng). The modern form 长 is a simplification of the traditional 長.
