会见

huì jiàn · HSK 6

to meet with (sb who is paying a visit)

🤝 会 (meet/gather) + 见 (see) = meet with someone face to face

会 means to gather or assemble, 见 means to see. Together they form a formal meeting — you gather to see an important visitor. The huì jiàn sound echoes 'hooray, Jan!' as if greeting a guest by name.

会 — 人 person on top + 云 cloud/say below (simplified from 會)
The traditional form 會 showed a lid over a vessel with contents stacked inside, depicting things coming together — hence 'meet, gather, assemble.' From 'gathering' it extended to 'meeting,' then 'understand' (minds meeting) and 'be able to.' The simplified 会 keeps only a schematic top and bottom.

见 — eye 目 over legs 儿 (人)
见 (traditional 見) is a pictograph of a person 儿 with a large eye 目 on top, emphasizing the act of seeing. The original meaning 'to see' broadened over time to include 'to meet,' 'to perceive,' and 'view/opinion.' The simplified form 见 keeps the same structure in cursive shorthand.
