会

huì · HSK 1

can

会 = 人 (person) over 云 (cloud) — a person who 'knows the clouds' can do it

Top radical 人 (person) sits above 云 (cloud, simplified from 雲). The old form 會 meant 'to gather/meet'; meeting people builds skill, so 会 came to mean 'can, know how to'. Also used for meetings (会议) and societies (社会).

会 — 人 person on top + 云 cloud/say below (simplified from 會)
The traditional form 會 showed a lid over a vessel with contents stacked inside, depicting things coming together — hence 'meet, gather, assemble.' From 'gathering' it extended to 'meeting,' then 'understand' (minds meeting) and 'be able to.' The simplified 会 keeps only a schematic top and bottom.
