in person

🙋 亲 (kin/intimate) + 自 (self) = do it yourself, in person

亲 carries the sense of close/intimate/personal, and 自 means self. Together they stress that the actor handled something firsthand, not via a proxy. Common in formal contexts: 亲自参加 (attend in person), 亲自动手 (do it oneself).

亲 — 立 (stand) + 木 (tree); simplified from 親
The traditional form 親 combined 亲 (phonetic, depicting a hazelnut tree) with 見 (see), suggesting closeness through frequent seeing of family. In simplified Chinese, 見 was dropped, leaving 亲. It now means 'parent,' 'intimate,' or 'in person,' and as qìng denotes in-laws.

自 — pictograph of a nose
自 originally depicted a human nose, shown frontally with the bridge and nostrils. Ancient Chinese pointed to their own nose to mean 'me,' so 自 shifted to mean 'self' or 'oneself.' A new character 鼻 was later created to carry the original 'nose' meaning.
