five-star (hotel)
⭐ 五 = five + 星 = star + 级 = level/grade, so a five-star grade
级 means level or grade (as in 年级 school grade). Stack the three parts: five + star + grade = the top hotel rating, 五星级.
五 — two horizontal lines + crossed strokes
五 originally depicted two parallel lines (heaven and earth) with an X between them, representing the interaction of the five elements. Over time it became the standard numeral for 'five.' The ancient form 㐅 (just the X) was later framed by the two lines to distinguish it clearly as a number.
级 — silk radical 纟 + 及 jí (phonetic)
级 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The silk radical 纟 originally referred to threads or the steps/ranks of silk cords used to mark official grades. The right side 及 (jí) supplies the sound. Over time the meaning shifted from 'cord-marked rank' to general 'level, grade, class.'
