争光

zhēng guāng · HSK 7

to win an honor

🏆 争 strive/compete + 光 light/glory = strive for the glory, win honor

争 means to contend or compete; 光 means light but also glory or honor. Put together, 争光 is literally striving for the glow of glory: to win an honor or prize for your team or country.

争 — hand 爫 (claw) over hand 又 pulling 亅
争 depicts two hands grabbing the same object from above and below, with a vertical stroke representing the contested item between them. The image of two parties tugging at one thing gave rise to its meanings of 'to contend,' 'to fight for,' or 'to dispute.' The modern simplified form streamlines the older 爭.

光 — fire 火 (top) + person 儿 (bottom)
Originally a pictograph of a person with fire above their head, depicting a torchbearer or the radiance from a flame. The character evolved to mean 'light' or 'brightness' in general, and by extension 'glory' and 'to shine.' The modern top component is a stylized form of 火 (fire).
