乘坐

chéng zuò · HSK 5

to ride (in a vehicle)

🚗 乘 (ride) + 坐 (sit) = ride-and-sit, i.e. to ride in a vehicle

乘 means to ride or board; 坐 means to sit. Together they describe the act of boarding and sitting in transport — a bus, train, or car. Pair with 火车, 飞机, 公交车 etc. Contrast with 骑 (ride astride, e.g. bike, horse).

乘 — person 人 atop tree 木 with two feet
Originally a pictograph showing a person standing on a tree, depicting climbing or mounting. The meaning extended from 'to mount/climb' to 'to ride' (a vehicle or animal), and later to 'multiply' in mathematics. The reading shèng (fourth tone) preserves the older sense of a chariot or vehicle.

坐 — two 人 (people) + 土 (earth/ground)
Originally a pictograph showing two people sitting facing each other on the ground (土). The earth component indicates the location of sitting. The meaning later extended from 'to sit' to related senses like 'to be situated' or 'to take a seat'.
