乖巧

clever

🧒 乖 obedient + 巧 clever/skillful = a well-behaved, sharp kid

乖巧 stacks 乖 (obedient, good) onto 巧 (clever, skillful, the same 巧 as in 技巧 skill). Together they describe a child who is both well-mannered and quick-witted: the lovable, smart sort.

乖 — 千 (thousand) on top + 北 (north) split below
乖 originally depicted something split or divided down the middle, with the upper element over a divided form resembling 北. Its earliest sense was 'to go against, deviate, be contrary.' Over time it shifted in colloquial Chinese to describe a child who is well-behaved — obedient enough not to stray — which is now its most common meaning.

巧 — 工 (work) + 丂 (breath/exhalation phonetic)
巧 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left 工 (work, craft) gives the meaning, pointing to skilled craftsmanship, while the right 丂 supplies the sound. From 'skilled handiwork' the meaning broadened to 'clever, ingenious,' and later to 'coincidental' as in 凑巧.
