主动

zhǔdòng · HSK 3

on one's own initiative

🙋 主 = master/host + 动 = move; the host moves first, acts on own initiative

主 means master or to take charge; 动 means to move or act. Together, the one in charge makes the move — doing something proactively rather than waiting. Opposite of 被动 (passive, being moved).

主 — flame/lamp on top of a stand 王
Originally a pictograph of a lamp with a flame on top of its stand, representing the lord or master of the household who tended the fire. The meaning extended from 'lamp/host' to 'master, owner, main, principal'. The character 炷 (wick) preserves the original 'lamp' sense.

动 — force 力 + heavy/重 (simplified from 動)
The traditional form 動 combines 重 (heavy) as the phonetic with 力 (force/strength) as the semantic, suggesting the effort needed to move something heavy. The simplified form 动 replaces 重 with 云, keeping 力 to convey action and motion.
