为难
wéinán · HSK 5
to feel embarrassed or awkward; to make things difficult (for someone)
😣 为 = for/do + 难 = difficult — doing something difficult, or making it hard for someone
为难 combines 为 (to do, for) with 难 (difficult). Literally do-difficult: either you feel awkward doing something, or you put someone in a tough spot by making things hard for them.
为 — simplified form of 為; from 爪 (claw/hand) over 象 (elephant)
The traditional form 為 originally depicted a hand leading an elephant, suggesting the act of doing or making work. Over time it generalized to mean 'to do, to act, for the sake of.' The simplified 为 preserves this 'do/for' meaning, with pronunciation shifting between wéi ('to be, to do') and wèi ('for, because of').
难 — 又 (right hand) + 隹 (short-tailed bird)
Originally written with 堇 (clay) plus 隹 (bird), 難 depicted a rare bird and was borrowed to mean 'difficult.' The modern simplified form replaces the left side with 又 (hand). The phonetic role of the original left component gave the reading nán.
