Held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month when the moon is fullest. Families gather to eat 月饼 (mooncakes) and honor the harvest. The 节 character marks it as a festival or holiday, the same one in 春节 (Spring Festival).

From 'bamboo joint' the meaning expanded to any segment, hence 'section,' 'festival' (a marked point in the year), and 'restraint' (knowing where to stop).
