individual person

👤 个 (measure word) + 人 (person) = a single person, an individual

个 is the generic counter used before nouns, and 人 means person. Together 个人 literally counts out one human unit, so it covers both 'an individual' and the adjective 'personal' (as in one's own).

个 — person 人 over enclosure-like component (simplified from 個)
个 is the simplified form of 個, originally a measure word for bamboo stalks. The traditional form combines 人 (person) with 固 (firm, phonetic). Over time it became the most common general-purpose measure word in Chinese, used for people and many objects without a specific classifier.

人 — pictograph of a standing person
人 is a pictograph showing a person viewed from the side, with two strokes representing the legs and torso of a standing human. In oracle bone script it clearly depicted a figure leaning slightly forward. The meaning has remained 'person' or 'human' throughout its history.
