to get angry
🔥 上火 = 上 rise + 火 fire: when your inner fire rises you get angry or overheated
In TCM, 上火 is literally fire (火) rising (上) in the body, causing symptoms like sore throat or mouth ulcers. The same fire-rising idea covers losing your temper.
上 — horizontal line above a baseline
上 is an indicative character (指事): a short stroke placed above a longer reference line shows the concept of 'above' or 'up'. The earliest oracle-bone forms used two horizontal lines for this; the modern shape added a vertical stroke for clarity. The core meaning of 'upper, above, to ascend' has stayed stable for millennia.
火 — pictograph of flames rising
火 is a pictograph showing flames rising upward from a fire, with the central stroke as the main blaze and the side strokes as sparks. The ancient oracle bone form looked even more clearly like a burning flame. It still means 'fire' today and serves as a common radical in characters related to heat, burning, or cooking.
