上岗
shàng gǎng · HSK 7
to take up one's post
🛡️ 上 (go up/onto) + 岗 (post, sentry station) = step onto your post = start the job
岗 = 山 (mountain/hill) + 冈, originally a lookout hill where a sentry stood guard. So 上岗 is literally going up to take your guard post — extended to mean reporting for duty or taking up any job.
上 — horizontal line above a baseline
上 is an indicative character (指事): a short stroke placed above a longer reference line shows the concept of 'above' or 'up'. The earliest oracle-bone forms used two horizontal lines for this; the modern shape added a vertical stroke for clarity. The core meaning of 'upper, above, to ascend' has stayed stable for millennia.
