一齐
yīqí · HSK 6
together
👥 一 (one) + 齐 (even/aligned) = all lined up as one, together
When everyone is 'one-even,' they act in unison. The yīqí sound echoes 'easy' — doing things together makes them easy. 齐 alone means neat or uniform, so 一齐 is literally 'uniformly as one.'
一 — single horizontal stroke
一 is one of the simplest pictographs in Chinese, depicting a single horizontal line to represent the number one. It has retained essentially the same form since oracle bone script over 3,000 years ago. By extension it also means 'first,' 'whole,' or 'same.'
齐 — pictograph of grain ears growing evenly (齊)
齐 is the simplified form of 齊, originally a pictograph showing three stalks of grain rising to the same height. From this image of even, level tops came the core meanings 'equal,' 'uniform,' and 'together.' It later extended to 'neat,' 'arranged,' and 'all at once.'
