一面

at the same time

一 (one) + 面 (side) = one side; paired as 一面…一面 it means doing two sides at once

一面 literally combines 一 (one) and 面 (side or face). In the 一面…一面 pattern it links two actions on two sides happening together, hence at the same time or simultaneously.

一 — single horizontal stroke
一 is one of the simplest pictographs in Chinese, depicting a single horizontal line to represent the number one. It has retained essentially the same form since oracle bone script over 3,000 years ago. By extension it also means 'first,' 'whole,' or 'same.'

面 — enclosure 囗 + 自 (nose/face inside)
Originally a pictograph showing a face framed by an outline, with 自 (nose) inside representing the central feature of the face. The early meaning was 'face,' which extended to 'surface,' 'side,' and 'aspect.' In simplified Chinese, 面 also absorbed 麵, adding the meaning 'flour/noodles.'
