porridge

🍲 一 one + 锅 pot + 粥 porridge = one pot of porridge, everything mushed together

Literally one pot of porridge: grains boiled until nothing holds its shape. Figuratively it labels any situation that has gone soft and shapeless, every part blurred into every other part, a complete mess.

一 — single horizontal stroke
一 is one of the simplest pictographs in Chinese, depicting a single horizontal line to represent the number one. It has retained essentially the same form since oracle bone script over 3,000 years ago. By extension it also means 'first,' 'whole,' or 'same.'

锅 — metal radical 钅 + 呙 (phonetic)
A semantic-phonetic compound. The metal radical 钅 (金) signals the meaning — a metal cooking vessel, i.e. a pot or wok. The right-hand component 呙 (guō/wāi) supplies the sound. Originally written 鍋 in traditional script, simplified to 锅 in modern mainland use.

粥 — bow 弓 + rice 米 + bow 弓
Originally an ideograph showing rice (米) cooking between rising vapor lines, depicted as two bow shapes (弓) representing steam. The character pictures grain simmering in water until soft. It primarily means rice porridge or congee (zhōu); the rare reading yù means to sell, a borrowed sense later written as 鬻.
