一早

yī zǎo · HSK 7

early in the morning

🌅 一 (one) + 早 (early/morning) = at the one early hour, i.e. first thing at dawn

早 by itself means early or morning; adding 一 (one) fixes it to a single early point, so 一早 is right at daybreak. The 日 (sun) on top of 早 sits above the horizon line, marking the sun just up.

一 — single horizontal stroke
一 is one of the simplest pictographs in Chinese, depicting a single horizontal line to represent the number one. It has retained essentially the same form since oracle bone script over 3,000 years ago. By extension it also means 'first,' 'whole,' or 'same.'

早 — sun 日 + ten 十 (originally 甲, a helmet/sprout)
Originally depicted the sun 日 rising above a sprouting plant or a person's head, suggesting the early morning when the sun first appears. The lower component was simplified over time into 十. The core meaning 'morning, early' has remained stable since oracle bone script.
